Ščurek

Label and closure for Ščurek Penina Brut Zero, a traditional-method sparkling wine from the family estate at Plešivo in Goriška Brda.

The Ščurek family has grown wine at Plešivo since 1823, left the local cooperative in 1986 and first bottled under its own name in 1989. Stojan Ščurek and his five sons now work twenty-five hectares. Brut Zero is the estate's sparkling wine, matured in bottle by the classical method.

Three surfaces, three techniques. The neck seal is gold foil on black in a soft lozenge, carrying Brda, the name, the vintage and SLO. The body label is uncoated stock left pale and unprinted across most of its area: the name is stamped in gold foil, the estate illustration is blind-embossed so it reads only as relief and shadow, and ZERO is the single line of flat black type. On dark glass, in low restaurant light, the foil is what carries at distance and the emboss is what rewards the hand.
